The Ars Electronica Center (AEC), which opened on January 1, 2009, is covered by a 5,000 m² large pixel front. Over 40,000 LEDs illuminate the complete outside of the Museum Of The Future. Beneath its unusual architecture, lighting is the essential design element of the AEC. With its changing appearances the LED-façade communicates the artistic and dynamic character inside the building to its outside. The lighting artwork is made up by 1,100 lighted glass front panels, each from 2 to 5 m² in size. Each glass pane is illuminated from the gap behind the glass front by a LED light strip, fitted vertically on one side. The special optics on each diode and the faceplate on the front construction produce a homogenous area of light over the whole glass pane.
